What is teeth whitening?
Teeth whitening is a non-invasive dental procedure used to lighten tooth color. Having bright white teeth enhances your appearance, and this is one of the main reasons people choose to bleach their teeth. It only takes about 15 minutes in the chair.
Reasons for teeth whitening:
- To whiten teeth with Fluorosis.
- To remove stains on your teeth (from soda, coffee, smoking, wine etc).
- To get rid of yellow, brown stained teeth.
How does the teeth whitening procedure work?
The procedure itself does not whiten the teeth. The way the procedure works, it's a gel, which is normally peroxide, much more concentrated than the ones in the stores. It's applied on the teeth, and then an LED light or a halogen light activates the gel, the peroxide in the solution, making your teeth whiter, and I feel that definitely does not damage your teeth.
Can whitening strips cause problems for my teeth?
The main problem patients have when they buy whitening strips is that gel from the whitening strips can go on the gums, irritating the gums and causing temporary damage to the gums.
Is teeth whitening permanent?
Unfortunately, teeth whitening is not permanent. It's temporary because of the diet people have, which consuming darker stuff kind of darkens the teeth. They're never going to go back to the original shade. They would always stay lighter once you had the procedure done once, but nevertheless become darker over time.
Are there any side effects to teeth whitening?
Teeth whitening generally doesn't have any side effects. The only side effect would be some immediate discomfort due to extraction of the stains from the surface of the tooth, which can last for one or two days. There are some patients who have no sensitivity at all, and other patients have sensitivity from the very beginning of the procedure.
How can I retain the results of teeth whitening?
The best way to retain the results is to try to use a whitening toothpaste and try to control your diet as far as consuming clear liquids and whiter foods.
