Learning More About Mercury-Free Dentistry

Dr. Florin Arhiri

How was mercury used in dentistry?

Mercury-free dentistry refers to fillings made of resin restorations, porcelain, or zirconia. Patients usually seek these kinds of restorations for a more natural appearance, stronger bonding, and concerns about the mercury content in amalgam fillings. All metal fillings contain mercury.

When should I replace any dental fillings I have?

The replacement depends on whether the older fillings are cracked, have recurrent decay, or for aesthetic reasons. If they're not causing any issues and seem to be in fairly decent shape, it's an option for the patient to decide if they want to replace them.

By replacing them, patients usually receive an upgrade in the material used to reconstruct the tooth and the peace of mind of having no mercury in their mouth.

How much mercury is in a dental filling?

Generally, the amount of mercury in fillings is low and won't typically cause symptoms in patients. The levels normally have to be much higher for symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, and tremors, which can be caused by mercury poisoning.

How does a dentist remove metal dental fillings?

In the dental office, to remove metal fillings, we use a rubber dam and high-speed evacuation. We usually try to cut the amalgam filling into pieces instead of removing it in one piece. This ensures the safety of the patient and our staff when removing these metal fillings.

How have advancements in dental care changed dental fillings?

In recent years, due to the progress and development of new materials like composite resins, porcelain, and zirconia, more dentists and patients prefer replacing metal fillings.
