What is a gummy smile?

A gummy smile is usually when somebody smiles and shows too much gum in proportion to the teeth they have in their mouth.

What causes a gummy smile?

There are multiple causes that can cause a gummy smile. One of them can be worn-down teeth. Another one is excessive gum. Another cause can be the upper lip being too small. Also, the jaw itself, the maxillary jaw, can be too big.

Does having a gummy smile affect dental health?

No, a gummy smile does not affect dental health. It just affects the appearance of the patient.

What are the most common treatment options for a gummy smile?

Some of the most common treatment options for a gummy smile can be gum surgery, which is performed with a laser. In cases where the gum is excessive, crown lengthening can also be performed, which basically makes the teeth look longer. Or, if the teeth are worn down, then crowns can be applied on top of the teeth to make the teeth look longer.

Another treatment option for a gummy smile can be Botox, which is applied on the upper lip, basically paralyzing the upper muscle and allowing the lip to kind of not show the gummy smile. Normally, the results last for roughly about 3 months, after which the patient can opt to have another Botox injection done.

Can surgery be used to correct gummy smiles?

Definitely, surgery can be used to correct gummy smiles. In more severe cases, when it's a bone problem, and the jaw is too big, it can involve orthognathic surgery. Also, as I said, laser surgeries can be done to trim down some of the excessive gum or restore the teeth to have a nice proportion between the teeth and the gums.

Are there any side effects?

No, there are not any kind of side effects. It is just overgrown tissue that most of the time needs to be removed.

Can muscle tone affect a gummy smile?

It is possible that it has to do with the tone of the muscles in the lips or face, and that can cause the smile to look gummier.

Are the treatments for a gummy smile temporary or permanent?

The temporary one is Botox, when Botox injections are applied, and a permanent option is either restoring the teeth if they're worn down or surgery performed on the gums to restore the right proportions of the gum versus the teeth.

What happens when a patient comes in for treatment for a gummy smile?

When the patient comes in, an evaluation is done to see exactly what the best course of action would be if surgery is elected to be performed. Afterward, the patient might experience some sensitivity and some discomfort in the gums. Instructions are given to the patient for the next few days until the gums heal.

How is the best dental plan chosen for gummy smile treatment?

That is analyzed based on different measurements that are taken, such as how high the smile line is, the condition of the teeth, and the size of the jaw. All these factors come together to make a decision on what would be the best course of action for a particular case.
