Tooth Infections in Berwyn, PA

Dr. Florin Arhiri

What is a tooth infection?

A tooth infection typically occurs when the nerve in a particular tooth is affected, often due to a deep cavity or mechanical trauma.

What are the most common symptoms of a tooth infection?

Symptoms usually include pain, which can be hot, cold-sensitive, throbbing, dull, pulsating, or a combination of these, keeping the patient awake at night, along with swelling.

What are the risks of leaving a tooth infection untreated?

The risks can be significant, potentially leading to death because the area is rich in blood vessels, circulation, and nerves. The infection can spread to the rest of the head if left untreated and can affect the jawbone as well.

Other signs, seen radiographically, show it's affecting the bone of neighboring teeth. The patient may have a fever, swelling, and the abscess may seem to get out of control. These symptoms need to be taken very seriously.

What is the treatment plan for a tooth infection?

Administering antibiotics to the patient, taking into account their health history and any allergies, is the main course of action. While home remedies or natural remedies can help, antibiotics should be the primary treatment.

What if I have an infection in a wisdom tooth?

I personally consider them nuisance teeth because they are the most unpredictable teeth in someone's mouth. They can be very quiet but can also cause a lot of havoc, creating abscesses, headaches, and jaw pain. Most of the time, the primary treatment is extracting the wisdom teeth.

What do I do if I notice swelling in my mouth?

They should definitely call their dentist and schedule an appointment as soon as possible to receive a prescription for antibiotics.
